The History of Bananas - Part I
Edible bananas very likely originated in the Indo-Malaysian territory where they were cultivated for food and fiber as early as 2000 B.C. The banana is mentioned in early Buddhist texts that have survived from 600 B.C.
From the Indo-Malaysian region, bananas were traded as a commodity and food crop to India, Australia, and Africa. Alexander the Great is credited with introducing the banana to the Western World after his military campaign in India. Arabian traders engaged in the slave trade also traded bananas.
Over the centuries, conquerors and traders alike brought the banana around the world but the banana that we eat today is very different from the banana that is mentioned in early recorded history. History Part II
